Access equality and diversity training as a new staff member
Australian nurses, doctors, allied health staff, support workers, students and contractors may receive access to the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust eLearning portal through a placement, partnership or employer. Follow the login instructions supplied with that arrangement, because an Australian hospital, university or training provider will not necessarily issue credentials for this portal.
The required starting point is the equality and diversity online module named in the welcome email, placement pack or mandatory-training notice. Sign in early enough to complete enrolment, assessment and any deadline before your first placement or clinical shift.
Check your portal access
Start with the access route named in your welcome email or training notice. Compare it with these options before creating another profile or asking a colleague to log in for you.
| Access route | When it applies | Initial check |
|---|---|---|
| Activation email | A first-time portal user | The activation link has not expired |
| Existing login | Someone who has used eLearning before | The profile status is active |
| Single sign-on | An organisation-enabled route | The browser and network are permitted |
| Placement login | An Australian student or contractor | The sponsor has activated the record |
After signing in, open your profile and confirm that your name, employer or placement, and contact details are correct. A visible login page does not always mean enrolment is active, so check that the required module appears under your learning before starting it.
Never share your password or multi-factor authentication code. If your manager sent a shared course link but no personal login, contact the eLearning Helpdesk or the Australian training coordinator who issued the placement instructions. Only one active account should be used for your completion record.
Locate the required module
Use the portal catalogue and open the area labelled eLearning, Courses or Mandatory Training; wording can differ between screen sizes. Filter for equality, diversity or inclusion, then compare the result with the exact title in your instructions. Searching by the supplied module code is safer than choosing a similarly named course.
If the catalogue layout is unfamiliar, the portal’s medicine module guide explains how staff move through online training and find related course information. Use that guide for orientation, then return to the equality and diversity search because a subject guide does not enrol you in the required module.
Open the module details page and check its audience, estimated duration, due date, assessment rule and number of permitted attempts. Select Enrol, Start or the equivalent control, then reopen it from My Learning. If it remains absent, your account may need activation rather than another search.
Account for Australian requirements
Because this portal belongs to an English NHS trust, its scenarios may use UK terminology, policies or spelling. Read those references as part of the module, but use an Australian trainer to explain their transfer to local practice. Equality and diversity training often uses examples rather than requiring learners to memorise one country’s rules.
For many Australian employees, workplace-rights sign-off may also refer to the Fair Work Act 1992 and guidance from the Fair Work Ombudsman. Federal anti-discrimination laws cover race, sex, disability and age, while state and territory laws can add protections or complaint procedures. Public-sector staff should check their own service’s policy rather than assume the federal route applies to every issue.
Cultural safety includes using respectful names and following local protocols for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, rather than treating all Indigenous Australians as one generic group. Managers may use NAIDOC Week resources to prompt learning, but respectful practice continues throughout the year. Staff in NSW or Victoria should also check requirements associated with NSW Health or the Victorian Department of Health, while AHPRA-registered practitioners should confirm their employer’s training rules.
Work through the module reliably
Use a current supported browser with cookies and pop-ups enabled for the site. A stable connection matters because some pages load assessment items individually. Complete the enrolment first, then work through the module in one browser tab, saving each section before moving onward.
Busy public transport in Sydney or Melbourne can make mobile connections unreliable. If you are travelling through a tunnel or station, wait until you have a stable signal and avoid repeated refreshes that may erase an unanswered question. Download any permitted reference material before leaving reliable Wi-Fi.
Use keyboard navigation, captions or a screen reader if those features suit your needs, and report missing text, low contrast or an unusable answer control. Do not use another learner’s account because accessibility settings, progress and assessment records are often attached to the individual profile.
Use completion checkpoints
Use these brief checks around sign-in and submission:
- Confirm your username, exact module title and due date.
- Update the browser and note any extension that blocks portal pages.
- Keep the activation email available until registration succeeds.
Before submission:
- Complete every question and any required declaration.
- Check the pass mark, attempt limit and completion status.
- Save the confirmation screen or PDF in the required folder.
Read the final screen before closing the browser and record the module title, completion date and any certificate reference in your employer’s learning system. If the Trust portal is not connected to that system, send only authorised evidence to your training coordinator and exclude passwords, patient details or unrelated personal information.
A downloaded copy with a clear file name can make the evidence easier to retrieve when your role involves several courses or deadlines. Keep it in the location specified by your employer, and retain the original confirmation reference until the training record has been accepted.
Resolve problems and finish
If the module will not open, try one supported browser in a private window and confirm that the activation link has not expired. Do not keep resetting passwords or create a duplicate profile, because each new email address can become a separate learner record and split your completion history.
For unresolved access, content or accessibility problems, contact the eLearning Helpdesk by phone or email using the details shown on the portal. Give your username, module title, exact error message, browser and a redacted screenshot; never send a password, authentication code or patient information. Your next operational step is to open the portal and start the module using the access route supplied with your offer or placement instructions.
